Friday, 4 June 2011:

The Irish Refugee Council are delighted to announce that former Supreme Court judge and former President of the Law Reform Commission, Mrs. Justice Catherine McGuinness has accepted an invitation to become patron of the Council.   In accepting, Mrs. Justice McGuinness expressed an interest in promoting comprehensive reform of the asylum system.

Mrs. Justice McGuinness says: “For many years I have watched with concern how the lack of an effective appeals mechanism has placed a heavy a burden on the courts.  The current asylum system is unnecessarily costly and time consuming.  It fails to serve the state, the applicant and the taxpayer.

“I am pleased to be working with the Irish Refugee Council’s campaign for early reform of the asylum system.”

Key priorities for the Irish Refugee Council are a single procedure for effectively assessing protection claims, a robust, independent appeals system, and an end to costly and inhumane  reception centres and delays.
