Irish Refugee Council welcomes the deferral of the closure of Lisbrook House

The Irish Refugee Council welcomes the announcement by Minister Shatter’s office that he has deferred the closure of Lisbrook House Accommodation Centre in Galway whilst he reviews the background circumstances leading to the decision to close it.

Sue Conlan, CEO of the Irish Refugee Council, said: “The Minister has adopted a pragmatic approach to the decision to move up to 270 residents, many of them children, at the start of the school year.  There is an urgent need for a review of the policy of accommodating people in such centres, especially children, as closures on such scale can only lead to severe disruption and be detrimental to the welfare of the people involved.  In the meantime, we hope that the Minister will appreciate the need for  the timing of such decisions to be reviewed and consideration given to alternative ways to deal with the budgetary constraints”.
