Irish Refugee Council condemns racist comments by Councillor Scully

Posted On: 22 November 2011

Sue Conlan, CEO of the Irish Refugee Council, says:

“Negative stereotypes create racism.  As we saw earlier this week when a Nigerian taxi driver was assaulted, this can lead to violence.  We all have a role to play in counteracting negative stereotypes and our elected officials have a special role to play in promoting tolerance and inclusion throughout the community.

“Councillor Scully’s comments are outrageous and not worthy of an elected representative.   It is ironic that on the same morning Cllr. Scully’s comments were made public, the Irish Refugee Council was giving a workshop on refugees and the myths surrounding asylum seekers in Ireland at a school in Naas.  We are encouraged that the younger generation do not share his views”
