Monitoring International Conventions

Ireland has signed and ratified a number of international conventions including the International Convenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).
By ratifying this Convenant, Ireland has agreed to adhere to certain conditions and to put into place domestic measures and legislation compatible with the Treaty obligations and duties.
Ireland was examined for the third time by the UN Human Rights Committee in Geneva in July 2008. Ireland published a report outlining their compliance with the ICCPR and the relevant sections therein. The UN Human Rights Committee invited non-governmentall organizations (NGOs) to submit their own reports highlighting the Governments failings to meet its obligations under the Convenant. The Irish Refugee Council submitted such a report and attended the examination of Ireland as part of a delegation. We also had an opportunity to make a presentation to the UN Human Rights Committee.
