Joint submission on the UPR

On Thursday 6 October,  Ireland was reviewed for the first time under the UN’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) mechanism. The UPR is a new and unique human rights mechanism of the UN Human Rights Council aiming at improving the human rights situation of each of the 192 UN Member States.

Under the mechanism, the human rights situation of all UN Member States is reviewed every four  years.  The result is an “outcome report” listing the recommendations made to the State
under review including those that it accepted and which it will have to implement before the next review.

The Irish Refugee Council, in a joint submission with Doras Luimni and Nasc has highlighted various failings in respect of Ireland’s treatment of refugees and asylum seekers.
